To patients suffering from symptoms of fixed facial nerve palsy
At the university hospital, our director Dr Takashi Nakao has been engaged in functional and cosmetic reconstruction of facial nerve palsy. Our expertise in not only plastic surgery but also cosmetic surgery, and can help you regain facial balance.
Causes of Facial Paralysis
Treatment of Facial Paralysis
We offer the best treatment for each patient's symptoms.
Surgery for Facial Symmetry
Among the balancing surgeries is static reconstruction. This surgery aims to reduce imbalance and achieve facial symmetry. Our director is also well versed in cosmetic surgery and is the best surgeon for post facial paralysis surgery. We offer treatment that emphasizes both cosmetic and functional aspects.
Adjustment of Lowered Eyebrows
Eyebrow Lift
This is a surgical procedure to raise the eyebrows by incising the skin directly above the eyebrows that have fallen due to facial paralysis. Due to the nature of the surgery, there is a drawback that the top of the eyebrow may be depressed, but we have devised a fixation method that minimizes the depression.
Endoscopic Eyebrow Lift
This is an effective method for patients with residual brow movement. An incision is made within the hair of the head to raise the eyebrows. The endoscope is used to raise the eyebrows by lifting the tissue from the skin. We use special surgical instruments for endoscopic surgery.
Eyelid Treatments
Upper Blepharoplasty
This is a procedure in which the eyelid itself is raised by excision of the upper eyelid skin and anterior elevation of the eyelid muscles. If the outer skin of the eyelid is obstructing vision, an incision may be made at the temple hairline. The upper eyelid morphology and function are improved.
Lower Blepharoplasty
Ectropion surgery is performed. In our clinic, we use dynamic canthopexy, a method previously presented at the Japanese Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Annual Meeting, to prevent postoperative regression as much as possible by moving the external angular ligament, or by harvesting the thigh fascia (thigh fascia) and combining it with the aforementioned methods to achieve improvement.
Dropping Mouth Corners
The skin of the nasolabial folds is excised and the corners of the mouth are elevated using fascia. The fascia can also be pulled downward to create a more natural morphology of the corners of the mouth. The muscles may also be severed to achieve balance.
Drooping Cheeks
Improvement can be expected with facelift surgery. Improvement of the corners of the mouth can also be expected.
Surgery to restore Facial Movements
Surgery to restore facial movement is called dynamic reconstruction. It includes transplantation of back muscles, eyelid-closing function surgery using temporal muscle migration and reconstruction of the smile. Currently, we do not perform these surgeries. We will refer you to a specialized facility if we diagnose that the surgery is indicated after consultation.
Treatment to relieve Facial Synkinesis
After acute facial nerve palsy due to Bell's palsy or Hunt's syndrome, abnormal facial movements (pathological co-movements) such as facial stiffness, cramps and eye and mouth movements against the patient's will may occur as sequelae. Although improvement can often be expected with rehabilitation, some patients may remain with the condition. Treatment options include BotoxⓇ injections to stop the muscle movement or removal of the muscle to improve the condition. The BotoxⓇ injections last only 3 to 4months, so the treatment must be repeated. We also provide guidance on rehabilitation at the same time.
Progress and Precautions
Stitches for facial nerve palsy reconstruction surgery are removed 1week after the surgery. Postoperative swelling will improve in about one month. Approximate completion will take six months. However, reconstructive surgery for facial nerve palsy may be performed multiple times.
