Fixation Plates Removal Post Corrective Jaw Surgery
This is Dr. Takashi Nakao from Nakao Plastic Surgery.
In Korea and Japan, corrective jaw surgery (facial osteotomy) is widely performed these days for the purpose of facial contouring.
It is an innovative treatment method that drastically changes the structure of the face.
The osteotomy is performed on the bone but in order to reach the bone, the face is widely dissected and the ligaments that support the face may become detached.
This results in a sagging face after the surgery. The desired facial contouring result will not happen with this facial sagging.
If sagging is severe, a facelift surgery is effective.
We will suggest the most appropriate surgical method depending on the patient's age and the degree of sagging.
Here, we removed the fixation plate for a patient who had a maxillary osteotomy done in Korea. We carefully paid attention to the shape of the head of the screw that fixes the plate since it is often different from the Japanese standard for cases performed in Korea.
The maxillary screw may cause postoperative sinusitis and in this particular case, the CT image showed evidence of sinusitis so we removed the screw.
